VSD Community (Vietnam Steel Detailing Community) exists because steel detailing knowledge in Vietnam has mostly lived in individual companies' heads and internal wikis — not in a place the whole industry could learn from. We're trying to change that.
Structural steel detailing is a small, specialized trade inside a much larger construction industry, and in Vietnam it has historically grown company by company, with each fabricator, detailing firm or erection contractor working out its own standards, checklists and workflow largely in isolation from the others. That works, but it means the same lessons — how to avoid a clash on a curved roof member, how to structure a numbering convention, what actually causes a shop drawing to get rejected — get learned separately, the hard way, inside every company instead of once, for everyone.
VSD Community is a place for fabricators, erectors, detailers, structural engineers and the organizations they work for to share that practical knowledge in the open — Tekla/BIM modeling technique, shop and erection drawing practice, GA drawings and marking plans, and real project experience — so the industry as a whole gets better faster than any one company could on its own.
The Knowledge Hub, project write-ups and glossary on this site are written primarily for fabricators, erectors, detailing firms, project managers, QA/QC engineers and structural engineers who work with structural steel shop and erection drawings day to day — whether that's on the drawing board, the shop floor or the erection site. Content is written to be useful on a real project, not as marketing copy, and we'd rather a page be a little plain and genuinely useful than polished and generic.
Knowledge Hub articles are written and shared by practicing steel detailing professionals in the VSD Community network, drawing on real project experience — not generated as generic filler. Before publishing, articles are reviewed for technical accuracy against standard industry practice (AISC and AWS conventions where US work is referenced, Tekla Structures workflow conventions for BIM content) and edited for clarity so the information is usable on an actual job, not just theoretically correct. If you spot something in an article that's wrong, outdated, or specific to a practice you've found doesn't hold up in the field, we want to hear about it — see the contact details below.
VSD Community is organized and maintained by Jodie Phan, based in Hanoi, Vietnam, together with contributing members of the community across fabrication shops, detailing firms and erection contractors working in Vietnam's steel structure industry. It is free to join for individuals and organizations working in the sector — see the Knowledge Hub to browse what's been published so far, or use the contact details below to get in touch, contribute an article, or ask a question.
